Editing
Before you submit any project for editing it is advisable to have developed it as much as possible. This can include having it reviewed by a friend or colleague or even having several beta readers offer an opinion. The more work you can do to develop your manuscript or project, the less editing will be required. If you have done this and are at a stage you can go no further, it is time to seek an editor.
Types of editing
The first level – structural/substantive editing
This level of editing ensures all the right information is in all the right places. In the structural editing level the basic principles for all writing are the same: Is all the information correctly set out? Does it flow well? Is it easy to read? Is the tone and language suitable for your audience? Does information need to be cut or explained further?
|
The second level – copyeditingThis is where grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, word usage and clarity of meaning are checked. In the case of multiple contributors, language and tone are checked for consistency.
|
The third and final level – proofreadingProofreading is the final editing check. An editor will look for inconsistencies or errors with spelling, grammar and punctuation, and for anything else that slipped through the copyedit process.
|
Occasionally a manuscript or project may need assistance outside these levels. In a developmental edit, an editor works with an author, or group of authors, to develop the project or the manuscript.
Every editing project is different so there is no set fee. A quote will be based on a sample of your manuscript or project. Please visit the contact page to obtain a quote. |
Before we start: If Novel Solutions is not the best 'fit' for your project the work will not commence and all efforts will be made to find a replacement editor at no additional charge. If a structural or developmental edit is recommended, but only copyediting has been chosen, please understand only the level of work that has been selected will be completed.
